Twenty-one of Thomas Kinkade's paintings fill these oversized pages, and a page near the front lists each one. The story follows Katie and her family on Christmas Eve, when her brother mistakes a lost child for the special visitor the whole town is waiting for. The family finds the meaning of the holiday in a way they never expected. The book is tall enough to stand open on a mantel, shelf, or buffet as part of a holiday vignette, and it keeps its glow in a stack with other seasonal books. The unused gift page makes it ready to give.

Start a new family tradition. On Christmas Eve, hold the oversized pages up to the lamplight so every child can take in each glowing window and snowy lane while you read aloud, the way families return each year to The Night Before Christmas. Stand it open on the mantel or buffet as part of a holiday vignette, and leave the gift page ready for a name, a date, and a dedication to a special child. It's a lovely gift for a child, a grandchild, or a collector of Kinkade's holiday art.

The book grew out of Kinkade's popular painting Christmas at St. Nicholas Circle, and author Douglas Kaine McKelvey wrote a story to bring the scene to life. Kinkade (1958–2012) was known as the "Painter of Light," and Media Arts Group of San Jose, California, held the copyright on his work. His soft, lamplit winter landscapes were among the best-loved Christmas art of the late 1990s. McKelvey, a Tennessee writer, later became widely known for his book of liturgies, Every Moment Holy. Tommy Nelson, the children's division of Nashville's Thomas Nelson, published the book in 1999, one of several Kinkade-illustrated titles the house released that year. It reads as a Christmas story in the tradition of the classics, set in a small town long ago, where waiting for a guest becomes a lesson in welcome.
