Ernest Sohn — a German immigrant who founded his New York company in 1951 and became one of mid-century America's most celebrated tableware designers — brought a European modernist's eye to American kitchens. The Contessa (also catalogued as Royal) is one of his most admired designs: an octagonal vitrified china form with a sculptural pine cone finial on the lid, elegant enough for a formal table, durable enough for the oven. This piece still retains its original sticker ("Oven Proof China Designed by Ernest Sohn"), suggesting it was never used. Embossed with the Ernest Sohn "S" logo and "Made in USA."
