Antique Japan at its most saturated — orange, pink, blue, and gold, all at once, on a square.
Moriyama Mori-Machi was a Japanese porcelain maker active in the early twentieth century, prized today for the richness and intricacy of their hand-painted decoration. This square bon bon dish with its gold-covered center handle is a prime example: orange, pink, and blue florals fill the interior, framed by a rust-toned verge and an intricate border layered with red, blue, yellow, and gold. The corners are gently indented, giving the square form a graceful lightness. Stamped "Hand Painted Japan" with the Moriyama Mori-Machi mark on the back. Estimated 1920s.
A striking piece for the chinoiserie collector, the maximalist decorator, or anyone who appreciates the confidence of a century-old hand at work. A remarkable and unusual gift.
