Josiah Wedgwood introduced Jasperware in 1774, on the heels of the celebrated Frog Service he'd designed a year earlier for Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. The matte, unglazed stoneware was formulated to take dye in soft, even color — this powdery blue among the most coveted — while the white relief figures were applied by hand in a technique known as sprigging. The oak leaf and acorn garland circling this piece's border is one of Wedgwood's most enduring motifs, appearing across dishes, trays, and vases for well over two centuries, and reflects the neoclassical taste for refined, garlanded ornament that defined the brand from its earliest days. Stamped on the back, "Wedgwood, Made in England 1978," this piece continues a tradition that has scarcely changed in two and a half centuries.
