A lighthouse sentinel on a rocky coast — and below it, a full year's worth of grocery store advertising from 1928 America.
This original advertising calendar was printed by Brown & Bigelow using their proprietary "Tintogravure" photogravure process, producing a richly toned image titled "The Sentry by the Sea" (dated 1926). The calendar itself is dated 1928 and is complete with all 12 months attached. The advertisements on the sides promote The Self Service Stores ("Serve Yourself and Save"), Medo-Maid Butter, and Banquet Ice Cream — a beautifully mundane time capsule of Depression-era grocery marketing. The print is in wonderful condition; the surrounding cardboard shows honest use with a couple of larger tears near the ad panels and some bent corners.
A striking piece for advertising ephemera collectors, Brown & Bigelow enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to the intersection of fine printmaking and commercial history.
