Nippon-marked porcelain represents one of the most collectible chapters in American import history — a window of just ten years when Japanese craftsmen were producing extraordinarily fine hand painted export ware under strict U.S. customs requirements.
This antique double-handled bowl is stamped with the "M in laurel wreath" Morimura mark, used from 1911 until 1921 — the mark that eventually evolved into Noritake. The hand painted border is a continuous band of carnations, spider mums, and smaller flowers in warm naturalistic tones, bordered top and bottom in gold. The porcelain itself is exceptionally fine and translucent, shaped into gentle waves and swirls that give it real sculptural presence. The pierced built-in handles are both functional and elegant. A minor manufacturer's defect on the verge and a few marks on the underside are both photographed.
A distinguished addition to any Nippon collection, and a meaningful gift for anyone who loves antique Japanese porcelain.
