Gold leaf. Embossing. Full color lithography. And it was designed to line the inside of a cigar box.
This is an original Blue Ribbon inner cigar box label — a 1920s chromolithograph produced for M. H. Sevis & Son of Springvale, Pennsylvania. It is the later, more elaborate of the two Blue Ribbon label designs — and it is magnificent. A gorgeous blue ribbon rendered in such extraordinary detail that you can actually see the velvet texture of the fabric. Scrolls, medallions, coins, a crown at the top flanked by two lions. Marked Blue Ribbon, For Men Who Know, Design Registered M. H. Sevis & Son, Springvale, PA. The contrast between the deep blue ribbon and the rich gilded scrollwork is exceptional. One available.
New Old Stock, never used, mint condition. Age-appropriate yellowing on the reverse only — the face is vivid and pristine. One tiny speck of gilding on the white bottom margin — appears to be original from the printing process, easily covered with a mat if framing.
Note: we also carry the original 1909 Blue Ribbon label if you'd like to own the complete set — two generations of one of Pennsylvania's most celebrated cigar brands.
Frame it for a study, a library, a bar, or a man cave. At 10.0 by 6.25 inches it fits a standard 11x7 or 10x8 frame beautifully.
Blue Ribbon cigars were introduced by the E. L. Golden cigar company of Bonneauville, Pennsylvania in 1909 — the most successful business ever to operate in that town. The original 1909 label was simpler; a decade later, M. H. Sevis & Son designed this far more elaborate version. A. J. Golden held the copyright for Golden's Blue Ribbon by 1926. Golden's produced their last cigar in March 1943.
