He looks terrifying — and that is entirely the point.

This is Barong, the king of spirits in Balinese mythology and leader of the forces of good. Fierce in appearance, he represents virtue, health, good fortune, and justice — a protector, not a threat. Hand carved in wood and hand painted in black, rust, and green with generous gilding on the wings and face, this traditional ceremonial mask from Bali dates to the 1970s–1980s. Ready to hang — nail in back — though the hanging loop appears to have been replaced at some point and you may want to update it before gifting. Excellent vintage condition otherwise; no damage.

On a gallery wall, in a boho or tropical interior, or as a statement piece in an entryway. A meaningful gift for a world traveler, a Bali devotee, or a collector of ritual art.
