A pair of vintage Japanese bird feather dioramas, framed in black lacquer shadow boxes — real feathers rendered into delicate, dimensional folk art rarely seen today.

  • Maker: Unmarked (Japanese cottage-industry artisans)
  • Materials: Real feathers, wood, glass
  • Dimensions: 8.5" tall × 4.0" wide × approx. 1.0" deep, each
  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Vintage, 1950s–1960s
  • Condition: Very good vintage — a couple of tiny white marks on the black frames; staining visible on the back of both frames. All acceptable due to age/use/wear. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.

This set of two dioramas depicts two finches in one frame and a long-tailed tit in the other, each bird built up from real feathers layered to create texture and dimension, framed in black lacquer shadow boxes finished with decorative Asian-style metal hooks. Sold as a set of two. One set available.

A striking pair for a gallery wall, a reading nook, or anywhere that could use a touch of quiet, handmade artistry — a thoughtful gift for a bird lover, a folk art collector, or anyone drawn to unusual mixed-media pieces.

These feather dioramas were made by cottage-industry artisans in Japan specifically for the Western export market, primarily between the 1950s and 1960s, in the years following World War II. Each bird's texture and dimension comes from real feathers, carefully layered — a craft tradition that produced genuinely one-of-a-kind pieces, since no two feather arrangements were ever quite the same.
