This original Old Hickory inner box label was issued by the Old Hickory Brand (likely Cuban Cigar Company, Cleveland, Ohio). It features a portrait of Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, surrounded by hickory tree leaves and hickory nuts, with Jackson's own signature embossed and gilded along the bottom border. The nickname Old Hickory appears boldly across the top — earned on the battlefield, where his soldiers began calling their iron-willed commander Hickory for his unyielding toughness, and the Old was added affectionately by a nation that never forgot him. Andrew Jackson (1767–1845) was the 7th President of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837. His victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 made him a national legend, and as president he fundamentally reshaped American democracy, expanding voting rights for white men and establishing the Democratic Party. His face has appeared on the $20 bill since 1928.
