Advertising thermometers were the branded gifts of their era — kept because they were useful, loved because they were beautiful. This one advertised Cliff's Inn, a Los Angeles establishment we know little about, which makes it all the more intriguing. The reverse-painted silhouette shows a lady training her wire terrier; the color lithograph of a clifftop house is ringed in foil, with foil detailing on the lady's dress as well — a touch of glamour in a small object. Dated to the 1920s–30s based on the absence of a phone number, when telephones were still a luxury. The back may conceal a calendar — we left it undisturbed rather than risk damage. Metal frame with improvised hanging hook. A true original — not a reproduction.
A wonderful piece for the advertising collectibles enthusiast, the dog lover, or anyone captivated by the forgotten corners of early Los Angeles. An unusual and evocative gift.
