• Details:  A very elegant fine china coupe soup bowl that's sure to bring many compliments from your guests.  This pattern is elegant in its simplicity, one single rose with a single bud and brown leaves.  It is bordered with a gold rim.  Each plate is stamped on the back: "Style House Fine China, Reverie, Made in Japan".  If you're curious about the small M and W mark on the back, this is for Montgomery Ward.  Montgomery Ward registered the Style House name as a trademark for use on various pieces in 1962. These dishes were made in Japan for Montgomery Ward.  This pattern would be perfect in both a traditional table setting as well as a modern or even minimalist setting.  Great to mix and match with other pink or brown dishes.

Montgomery Ward Inc. was a department store & mail order retailer, which operated between 1872 and 2001.  It was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward and Andrew Ward in Chicago, Illinois.  They were traveling salesmen with a great idea, bring "city" goods to rural areas at a low price by way of catalog orders, and have the  customer pick up at train stations.  With much success the company added to its mail order business by opening its first retail outlet store in Plymouth, Indiana in 1926.  In 1928, two years after opening its first outlet, they had opened 244 stores. By 1929, they had more than doubled the number of outlets to 531. Its flagship retail store in Chicago was located on Michigan Avenue between Madison and Washington streets.  By the end of the 1930's, Montgomery Ward had become the country's largest retailer.  During the 1970's, the company began to struggle.  In 1973, its 102nd year in business, they  purchased a small discount store chain, that was based in Miami called Jefferson Stores, renaming these locations Jefferson Ward.  In 1985, the company closed its catalog business after 113 years.  Facing competition from many other retailers, the company's sales declined, in May of 2001 Montgomery Ward was liquidated ending a 129-year enterprise.  Colony Brands, the new owner, announced in 2010 that it would keep the Montgomery Ward catalog business going.  The website launched September 10, 2008, with new catalogs mailing in February 2009 and we understand it's still going today under the name "Wards".   A little known fact about Montgomery Ward history, in 1939, as part of a Christmas promotional campaign, staff copywriter Robert L. May created the character and an illustrated poem of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The store distributed six million copies of the storybook in 1946 and Gene Autry popularized the song nationally.
