This round Japanese box from the 1960s is carved with an unhurried precision that speaks to a different era of craft. Mt. Fuji rises on one side, temples and arched bridges appear across the rest, and the lid carries a small turned wooden finial at its center. The interior is plain and smooth — the carving is reserved entirely for the exterior, where it belongs. Two small floral shapes carved on the underside of the lid are believed to be the artist's mark; there is no other maker's signature.
