  • Made in Japan
  • Vintage: 1981
  • Details:  This beautiful porcelain box, shaped like a playful kitten, originally held Elizabeth Arden's fluffy milk bath.  This white kitten was part of the "Southern Heirlooms Limited Edition Collection" inspired by the historic landscapes of the old south. This collection was a nod to the luxurious land, stretches of fertile fields, weeping willows, and wild flowers yet untouched by the industrial age.  This sweet porcelain box is over 40 years old and in perfect condition, now empty, it remains to be enjoyed as a trinket box, vanity box, jewelry box or just lovely on its own as an accent/decor piece.  The cat's head is adorned with wild flowers and a blue bow. It is stamped on the bottom:  "Southern Heirlooms, Made in Japan Exclusively for Elizabeth Arden".  This is a beautiful piece of the cosmetic industry history, great for a collector.  Would make a beautiful gift for a cat lover!

Elizabeth Arden is not just a multi-million dollar company, there was a lady behind this great company.  This well known entrepreneur was born in Ontario, Canada in 1884 as Florence Nightingale Graham.  Shortly after arriving in the United States, she worked for a beautician in New York City and in 1910 she and her partner, Elizabeth Adair, opened a salon on Fifth Avenue.  Unfortunately that partnership ended, but Florence changed her name to the salon's name, "Elizabeth Arden", and hired chemists to develop her own line of creams and lotions.  By 1915 she had expanded to the international market, by 1922 she opened her first salon in Paris and as they say, the rest is history.  Elizabeth Arden died in New York City on October 18, 1966.  The company was purchased by Eli Lilly in 1971.  As of September 7, 2016, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Revlon.  Some interesting facts about Elizabeth Arden:  Was first to introduce travel size items, first to offer in-store makeovers, her most fierce competitor was Helena Rubenstein, so much so, that a musical called "War Paint,” was made about them.  One of her thoroughbred horses named Jet Pilot won the Kentucky Derby in 1947.
