A blue-cabbed Tiny Tonka wrecker / tow truck, with a red boom and its cord and hook still attached, a detail that often goes missing on these child's hand-sized tow trucks. Compact, sturdy and ready to rescue the next stalled toy car.
- Maker: Tonka
- Materials: Pressed steel, plastic base, plastic windshield
- Dimensions: 4.5 inches Long, 2 inches Wide, 2.25 inches Tall
- Origin: USA
- Era: Vintage 1970s
- Condition: Very Good (VG). Age appropriate paint wear, scratches on windshield but no chips or cracks, all four wheels in great condition. Both "axles" are showing rust. Retains the Tonka labels on both doors. The tail end of the cord beyond the hook knot is slightly frayed. Overall, it is in very good vintage condition, considering this was meant for rough child's play and it's over 55 years old. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.
The pressed steel body is blue with a red boom and a plastic base, with Tonka decals on the doors that carry tiny "Mound, Minn." lettering. The boom is embossed 55120 on the side and carries a black pulley wheel at its tip. A black braided cord runs over the pulley, knotted inside the boom at one end and tied to a wire hook at the other, about 3 inches from the boom to the hook. The cord and hook appear to be original, which is unusual, since they are often missing or replaced on these small wreckers.
A natural gift for the Tonka fan who remembers rescuing their own toy cars, or a charming piece for a vintage truck display. Great piece for a collector.
Tonka began as a toy maker in 1947 from Mound Metalcraft, a Minnesota company that had started out making garden tools, and it took the Tonka Toys name officially in 1955. The company built its reputation on heavy pressed steel trucks designed to survive real play. The Tiny Tonka line arrived in 1968 with nine child's hand-sized vehicles, and a wrecker was among that first group.
