A blue Tiny Tonka tow truck with a red boom and its cord and hook still in place, ready to rescue the next stalled toy car. Child's-hand sized, pressed steel and full of play-worn character.

  • Maker: Tonka
  • Materials: Pressed steel, plastic base, plastic windshield
  • Dimensions: 4.5 inches Long, 2 inches Wide, 2.25 inches Tall
  • Origin: USA
  • Era: Vintage 1970s
  • Condition: Good (G). Large scratch on the front of the windshield (not chipped or cracked), and more paint wear than our other wrecker, with some rusting where the paint has worn. All four wheels in great condition but the "axles" are showing rust. Retains the Tonka labels on both doors. The tail end of the cord beyond the hook knot is slightly frayed. Overall, it is in good vintage condition, considering this was meant for rough child's play and it's over 55 years old. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.

The pressed steel body is blue with a red boom and a plastic base, with Tonka decals on the doors that carry tiny "Mound, Minn." lettering. The boom is embossed 55120 and carries a black pulley wheel at its tip. A black braided cord runs over the pulley, knotted inside the boom at one end and tied to a wire hook at the other, about 3 inches from the boom to the hook. The cord and hook appear to be original, which is unusual, since they are often missing or replaced on these small wreckers. All four wheels roll smoothly.

A natural gift for the Tonka fan who remembers rescuing their own toy cars, or a charming piece for a vintage truck display.

Tonka began as a toy maker in 1947 from Mound Metalcraft, a Minnesota company that had started out making garden tools, and it took the Tonka Toys name officially in 1955. The company built its reputation on heavy pressed steel trucks designed to survive real play. The Tiny Tonka line arrived in 1968 with nine child's-hand sized vehicles, and a wrecker was among that first group.
