  • Pattern:  Miyako Imariware
  • Made in: Japan for the National Silver Co
  • Vintage: 1970's - 1980's
  • Details:  This teapot has a very beautiful handcrafted and very ornate Imari pattern with a bamboo handle.  Imari style has a tendency for over-decoration that leads to exaggerated busyness but it is extremely eye catching and the colors on this teapot are so bright and beautiful, they are hard to resist.  Many of the decorations are outlined or accented in gold, and finished with a gold rim.  There is lots of significance and meaning within the decorations.  The pattern features different flowers that symbolize beginning, abundance and rejuvenation.  There is Karakusa, the twists and spirals of this pattern resemble plants or vines. Due to the healthy growth of vines, the pattern came to symbolize luck, prosperity, and eternity.  Flowers frequently accompany the spiral-like design, and they are here as well (the cobalt blue section with the gold spirals and the white flowers).  There is the Hishi pattern (the red diamond shapes), which means "Grand Generativity", to provide care and concern for younger and older generations.  We see the Shippo pattern, it is a shape overlapped by several circles, the overlapping circles symbolize "happy ending".   That's just a few of the symbols on this piece, if given as a gift, it would be fun to tell your recipient about these decorations.  Perfect teapot for a chinoiserie lover!
