This pair of Japanese yunomi — the handleless cups made for slow, contemplative drinking — carries a simple, elegant pattern: a white lotus blossom with a golden center and fine brown pistils, trailing along a vine of broad green leaves to a delicate bud. The background fades in a soft ombré from deep charcoal at the rim to near-white at the base. Both are finished with a slim gold rim and a small foot; the bases bear blue Japanese characters.

A serene gift for the tea lover, the collector of Japanese ceramics, or anyone drawn to objects that hold a little stillness. Beyond tea, they work beautifully as small dessert cups, beer taster or flight sampler cups, sake cups, or votive holders for a soft, ambient glow.

Yunomi cups are a staple of everyday Japanese tea drinking, prized for their simplicity and the way a single motif — here, the lotus, a flower long associated with purity and calm in Japanese and Buddhist symbolism — can carry meaning without ornament.
