The porcelain blank was made by Rosenthal in Bavaria, then shipped to Chicago where Pickard's studio artists painted it by hand. Two distinguished names on one piece, produced in a window of just seven years. Pickard China was founded in 1893 in Wisconsin by Wilder Austin Pickard, initially specializing in hand-decorating European porcelain blanks with a team of painters many of whom had trained at the Art Institute of Chicago or emigrated from Europe. This piece dates to 1903–1910, before Pickard began producing their own porcelain in 1937. Rosenthal, their blank supplier here, was and remains one of Bavaria's most celebrated porcelain houses.
