An octagonal shape with a black and white floral abstract that carries just a hint of the Orient — the Millbrook pattern is unlike most mid-century American dinnerware, and that distinctiveness is exactly what makes it collectible. The pattern repeats all around the cup and across the saucer border; the verge is embossed rather than smooth. Solid, considered, and entirely itself.
The backstamp reads "Independence Ironstone INTERPACE, Japan" — a mark with a layered history. Independence originated with Castleton China, passed through Shenango Pottery, and came under INTERPACE (the same corporate umbrella as Franciscan) in 1968, when it was manufactured in Japan. The line last appeared in the Franciscan catalog in 1976. A piece of mid-century American ceramics history produced on the other side of the world.
A wonderful find for an Independence or INTERPACE collector, or anyone drawn to the pattern's quiet graphic confidence. A good gift for a collector or a birthday.
