Indigo bridges, willow trees, a solitary robed figure at the water's edge — the Canton Blue pattern carries centuries of blue-and-white storytelling in a sugar bowl you can actually use.
This transferware porcelain sugar bowl draws from the long tradition of Canton and Blue Willow designs that have traveled from Chinese export ware through English bone china and into countless Western kitchens and collections. This version — pattern name Canton Blue, maker marked simply "CHINA" — adds a distinctive detail to the classic landscape: a single figure in robes, staff in hand, standing quietly at the rock's edge. The lid carries an intricate blue floral and swirl border. Similar in spirit to Mottahedeh's Blue Canton but its own distinct pattern. Estimated to the early 1990s.
At home on a formal table, a collected blue-and-white shelf, or repurposed as a trinket box or bathroom vessel for cotton rounds. A lovely replacement piece for those with a Canton Blue set, and a beautiful standalone for the blue-and-white devotee — a thoughtful gift for any occasion.
