  • Details: This cut wood work on this fan is absolutely stunning!  It is hand painted wood with a gorgeous "open-work" cut out design and fabric leaf with a painted gold border. The colors are vibrant purple, magenta and plum. This is a hand made fan by Folgado Romeu in Alaia Spain, and sold by El Corte Ingles in Madrid, and highly collectible.  Retains its original store sticker, based on the logo we were able to date this one to between 1957-1962.  Fans have been around since Roman times but these hand held - folding fans were introduced in the West during the 17th Century, and quickly became popular.  These were not only great for keeping cool, they also kept bugs and unworthy suitors away.  They became a fashion accessory, much like a brooch or bracelet, these were decorative pieces of art to be worn and shown.  Today we love them as home decor; whether framed and hung on the wall, opened on a base/stand on a tabletop, used as a backdrop for figurines or other knick-knacks, or several displayed on a wall; fans can create an atmosphere of sophistication, romance, Bohemian, Victorian, fun, quirky or tropical, just depends on the fans and how you want to use them.  These make great gifts for Valentines Day, Mother's day and birthdays.

El Corte Ingles is a department store headquartered in Madrid, Spain.  Founded by Ramon Areces and Cesar Rodriguez in 1940, it is the largest department store group in Europe, and the third-largest in the world.  In October 2013, the firm sold a 51% stake in the financing department to the Spanish banking group Grupo Santander.  In 2019, El Corte Inglés sold IECISA to GFI and they remain in business today.
