A reverse painted butterfly silhouette on convex glass, overlaid onto a printed floral background of sweet peas. The frame is real wood with a white and gold wash, still shiny. The back is black cardboard with a built-in hanging loop — worn but functional. The piece is signed on the back: "From Ernest...1942," the last name difficult to read. We know exactly what this was: a Mother's Day gift, eighty-some years ago, from a son to his mother. The poem, the sweet peas, the butterfly — all of it chosen with care.
On a mantle, a bedroom wall, a powder room — or given again as a Mother's Day gift to someone who will understand it. A genuinely moving small object.
