Atterbury & Company of Pittsburgh is best remembered for their animal-covered dishes and over 100 patented lamp designs — but their tableware, when you find it, is equally compelling.
This oval amber glass platter, made somewhere between the 1860s and 1903 when Atterbury merged into the United States Glass Company, is a layered composition of Victorian pressed glass at its most assured: a pebbled "thousand eye" base, geometric dashes and dots along the border, embossed daisies on the built-in handles, and a notched rim that gives the whole piece an architectural crispness. Two chips are present — one on the rim, one on the bottom ring visible only when inverted — both photographed and priced accordingly. As with all antique pressed glass, some edges are less finely sanded than modern pieces; handle the notched rim with care.
A genuine collector's piece for the EAPG enthusiast, the amber glass devotee, or anyone who appreciates Victorian-era American glass at its most inventive.
Condition: Good antique. Two chips (one on rim, one on bottom ring — both photographed). Minor surface scratching consistent with age. Some edges sharp from period production; handle with care.
