Before the salt shaker, there was the salt cellar — and before the individual cellar, there was the master salt, placed at the center of the table for all to share. This is one of those: a rectangular octagonal form with an indented ribbed oval pattern on the base, blown glass, very heavy and thick, with bubbles trapped inside that place it firmly in an era before machine manufacture. Similar in form to McKee designs of the period, but with distinctively square-cut corners that set it apart.
A spoon is included, though not original, nor antique. Use it on a formal table for finishing salt, on a bar for a rimming dish, or as a small and beautiful antique object in its own right.
A serious find for an antique American glass collector, or a beautiful and humble piece of domestic history for anyone who appreciates the real thing.
