A piece of American advertising history — and a record worth preserving.
This set of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Mose salt and pepper shakers was made by F&F Mold & Die Works in Dayton, Ohio, starting in 1949 as a promotional giveaway for Quaker Oats customers who saved Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix box tops. Aunt Jemima stands in her red dress, matching headscarf, white apron, and white neckerchief. Uncle Mose, wearing a red jacket and yellow pants with top hat in hand. Uncle Mose was previously known as Uncle Rastus, in early 1910's he became Mose as not to confuse him with the Cream of Wheat chef mascot known a Rastus, reportedly inspired by Chicago chef Frank L. White (1867 – February 15, 1938). Paint loss is present and is acceptable given the age and use — it is part of what makes these two honest survivors.
Black Americana collectibles are a meaningful and complex category. This piece honors Nancy Green — one of the first African-American models, and the advertising world's first living trademark — while also preserving an unvarnished record of American commercial history. We encourage purchase with intent for preservation and for the greater good. We carry additional Aunt Jemima shakers, search Aunt Jemima if interested in more.
