Franciscan was the dinnerware line of Gladding, McBean & Co., a California ceramics firm founded in 1875 in Lincoln, where it made sewer pipe and architectural terra cotta. After acquiring the Tropico Potteries plant in Glendale in the 1920s, the company launched Franciscan dinnerware in 1934, and in 1941 it introduced Desert Rose. The pattern became one of the most popular American dinnerware designs ever made, and Glendale kept producing it for more than four decades. Wedgwood, which bought Franciscan in 1979, closed the Glendale plant in 1984 and moved production to England, which is why collectors look for the Made in U.S.A. mark. These cups show the deeper embossing and more pronounced scalloped rim of the earlier California production, the era collectors seek most.
