Nenes are a species of bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and are the official bird of Hawaii. They are also known as nēnē as well as Hawaiian goose. It is believed they are related to the Canadian Goose but migrated to the Hawaiian Islands thousandths of years ago and stayed. As most waterfowl, they are herbivores and eat mainly leaves, seeds, fruit, and flowers of grasses and shrubs. The Hawaiian name nēnē comes from its soft call.
