Benoît Chirat was a French artist celebrated for his exquisite still-life paintings of fruits, flowers, and botanical subjects. The engraving was made by Robert Bénard (1734–1794), a French master engraver best known for producing over 1,800 plates for Diderot and d'Alembert's celebrated Encyclopédie — one of the most important publishing projects of the Enlightenment. In the late 1930s and 1940s, Artistic Picture Publishing purchased original works and reproduced them full-size for the American decorative print market — pieces that today are actively collected, with comparable examples regularly changing hands in the $50–$100 range.
