Stamped on the back Ivory China, Meito China, Made in Japan, Springtime, this set includes 7 appetizer plates plus a matching bonus bowl — included because a single bowl deserves a good home too. Use the bowl as an oil dipper, an olive dish, a small candy bowl, or a condiment server alongside the plates.
A serene, versatile set — lovely for spring and summer tables, equally fitting for Easter, Mother's Day, or a bridal shower. Hand wash recommended to maintain the gold; not microwave safe.
Meito China traces back to 1908, when Kotaro Asukai — a former engineer at what would become Noritake — founded Nagoya Seito Sho in Nagoya, Japan; many of Asukai's fellow Noritake artisans followed him to the new company, which is part of why early Meito wares closely resemble Noritake's own. The company was sold to Sumitomo interests during World War II and renamed Narumi Seito Sho, but continued using the Meito China backstamp for decades after; Narumi still manufactures fine bone china and porcelain today from Nagoya.
