The mark on the base of this Bavarian porcelain cake plate is rare enough that even specialists still argue about who made it.

This is Bavarian porcelain of the 1930s or 40s at its most accomplished: a center composition of white, yellow, and pink roses; an iridescent border in light green and warm beige with white flowers; and scrolled gold detailing along the rim and foot.

Serve cake from it, fruit, or nothing at all — it's equally beautiful displayed, and at 9½ inches handle to handle, it's a proper serving size.

The Red Lion mark — a lion perched atop a box reading "Made in Bavaria" — has been tentatively linked to Lehmann Arzberg, though never confirmed. A mark rare enough to stump specialists is part of what makes hunting down Bavarian porcelain so interesting.
