Dated to 1949 via a sourced Shawnee catalog from that year, this piece shows the man playing a shamisen — the traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument, often called a mandolin in Western references. Made in Zanesville, Ohio and stamped "USA 573" on the base. Shawnee closed in 1961 after facing postwar foreign competition, but pieces like this one have only grown in desirability since — still accessible, still beautiful, still very much worth finding.
