- Pattern: Vintage Ceramic Pitcher, Paul and Virginia, Hand Painted, Collectible, Tropical Theme, Paul et Virginie Pitcher, Hobbyist Mold, Home Decor, Decorative Pitcher, One of a Kind, (Discontinued)
- Made in: USA
- Vintage: 1971
- Details: A really lovely pitcher with a tropical islands look and perfect for Spring and Summer! The pitcher is a great conversation starter and hand painted. Made from a mold (mould), based on a very old pitcher from the United States Pottery Company (1852 - 58), known as "Paul and Virginia", those originals are mostly in museums. The name, and original pattern from the 1850's, comes from a very old book titled, Paul et Virginie, written by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788. The story is about two young unwed mothers who meet on the tropical French island of Mauritius and become friends. Their children are raised on this island and eventually fall in love. We won't tell you more because it's a tragic story, worthy of being read. This pitcher is stamped "DJS 5-71, which believe are the artist's initials and date made, May of 1971". These were made in many colors and are highly collectible, a great example of hobbyist molds. Great gift for a fan of the author or lovely as part of your decor.
