Fruits cluster across both pieces in the same design, trimmed in gold at the rim, and the basin is generously sized to anchor a dresser or vanity on its own. Both pieces retain the original foil label reading "Enesco Imports Japan," which helps date the set to the mid-century. Today the pair is more decorative than functional, though it can still be used as designed.
Lovely for fall decor, a country farmhouse, a rustic cabin, or an antique-styled home. A gracious gift, or a quiet luxury on a bedroom dresser or vanity. The pitcher can also stand alone to hold fresh-cut flowers.
Enesco began in 1958 as the import division of the N. Shure Company, a merchandising catalog company, and took its name from the phonetic spelling of its parent's initials, N.S.Co. The figural ceramics and giftware it brought in from Japan during the 1950s and 1960s are among today's most collected, and the company later became best known for Precious Moments. A pitcher and basin set like this one recalls the days before indoor plumbing, when a ewer and bowl sat on a bedroom washstand for morning washing and were set out for overnight guests. By the time this set was made, such pairs had become decorative keepsakes, a nostalgic nod to a gracious household ritual.
