Everything about this piece rewards a second look — an applied floral border of remarkable intricacy, deeply etched scrollwork across the surface, shell feet, and the practical bonus of an original Pyrex glass liner that makes it genuinely usable for hot dishes. This is silverplate at its most accomplished, from a maker whose hallmark took real research to identify: Crown Silver Company Inc. of Brookline, Massachusetts, active from 1935 to 1950.
The backstamp on this piece is intentionally faint — Crown Silver used a delicate mark — but it's there, confirmed against "Silver Hallmarks and Marks." That detective work is part of what makes a piece like this special. Note that areas of the applied border show some worn plating, photographed for full transparency; the scrollwork and overall structure remain beautiful.
A striking centerpiece for a holiday table or formal gathering, and a rare find for serious silverplate collectors.
