Made by hand in Sorrento, Italy — the hillside city above Naples renowned for its intarsia woodwork — this music box is inlaid in natural wood tones with a warm finish, set on four small brass feet, with an 18-note Sankyo movement tucked inside.

"Santa Lucia" is a traditional Neapolitan barcarole, published in Naples in 1849 and translated into Italian by Teodoro Cottrau — making it the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics. The original words celebrate the picturesque waterfront district of the same name on the Gulf of Naples, sung from the perspective of a boatman inviting a passerby out for an evening row. The tune went on to become one of the most recorded songs to come out of Naples, later performed by Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza, and Luciano Pavarotti among many others.
