Beer Stein: Black Labrador, Linda Picken Winter Music, Pewter Lid, Gerz, Germany, 1980s

This German stoneware beer stein with pewter lid, made by Gerz in the 1980s, features two wildlife paintings by award-winning artist Linda Picken — a Black Lab in the snow with Canadian geese overhead, and a second Lab resting in dry cattails as mallards take flight. Both scenes bordered in oak leaves, acorns, and pine.

The pewter lid (97% Zinn) carries the same acorn-and-pine-cone motif as the body, with an acorn leaf serving as the lifting mechanism and cascading down the handle — every detail considered, nothing wasted.

Linda Picken, born in 1944 and still active as an artist in the American Ozarks, studied at the Des Moines Art Center and majored in art at Drake University. Her wildlife and animal portraiture has earned national recognition; she was named an Honorary Trustee of Ducks Unlimited and received the organization's first Silver Palette and Chisel award, with dozens of her paintings selected over the years to raise funds for conservation.
