It's a great gift for the ship collector, the Old Spice or Americana enthusiast, or anyone who appreciates a well-made piece of West German craftsmanship.
The etched glass depicts the Salem Grand Turk, a 300-ton ship built for Elias Hasket Derby that served during the American Revolutionary War before becoming the first US ship in the China Trade. The pewter lid carries a matching compass rose design, with a lifting mechanism embossed "Old Spice" on one side and "W. Germany" on the other — stamped just one year before West and East Germany reunified in 1990. Old Spice itself began with the Schulton Company, founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz; what started as a women's fragrance in 1937 was followed by Old Spice for men in 1938, and Procter & Gamble purchased the brand in June 1990.
