Two boys, one sailboat, and the unmistakable thrill of the right of way.
Courtney Allen (1896–1969) began selling illustrations to his hometown newspaper at age eleven. By 1928 he was painting covers for Youth's Companion, the beloved children's weekly that had been running since 1827. This full-color cover captures two boys on a sailboat, another vessel bearing down fast — the scene mid-crisis, the colors still bright nearly a century later. Allen went on to exhibit at the Chrysler Art Museum and the Provincetown History Museum; his book illustrations remain collected today. The reverse carries a full-page, full-color Baby Ruth candy bar advertisement — a bonus piece of Curtis Candy Company ephemera from the same era.
Frame the sailing side for a boy's room, a lake house, or anywhere the spirit of summer on the water belongs. A lovely gift for a sailing enthusiast, an Allen admirer, or anyone who appreciates the golden age of American illustration.
