The Libbey Glass Company we know today started in 1892 in Toledo, Ohio.  However, Libbey has a long history, going back to 1818 in Massachusetts as New England Glass works.  It wasn't until 1878 when William L. Libbey leased the (by then out of business) New England Glass Works company that the name Libbey was added firm, it became New England Glass Works, Wm. L. Libbey, Prop.  It was renamed the Libbey Glass Company in 1892.  Today the company is owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. The Libbey Glass Company division, which still makes tableware, operates at its original site in Toledo.
