An orange sweater. A matching knit cap. A face that says "Bully for You" and means every word of it.
This is a vintage COBY "Wide Eyed Pets — The Pet Set" birthday greeting card, framed in a real wood frame — a dressed-up Boxer (or possibly Bulldog) in an orange sweater and matching knit cap, part of the beloved and highly collectible COBY Wide Eyed Pets series from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Inside it reads: "Having a Birthday? Bully for You!" Found framed and kept that way. One available.
COBY's Wide Eyed Pets were one of the defining kitsch phenomena of their era — the Margaret Keane "Big Eyes" movement had made oversized, soulful animal faces a cultural fixture, and COBY brought that energy to greeting cards with a whole cast of dressed-up pets that Americans promptly took out of their envelopes and framed. Most everyone who grew up in a house with one of these on the wall has a feeling about it. The Pet Set cards are now actively collected, especially examples that retain their original frames — this one does, in a real wood frame in good vintage condition with a signed interior.
The paper has yellowed on the reverse, as expected at this age. The frame shows honest vintage patina — if you're gifting it, you may want to replace the frame; if you're keeping it, the patina is part of the charm.
A wonderful piece for a COBY collector, a lover of 1960s–70s kitsch, a dog enthusiast, or anyone who grew up with a Wide Eyed Pet on their wall and has been looking for one ever since.
