Four pieces together — gravy boat, underplate, lid, and matching ladle — all hand-made from a ceramic mold, all in one uncommonly complete set. The pattern reads as feathers: layered, slightly raised, with a glossy finish and an eggshell rather than bright white tone. The lid handle is beautifully formed; the handles on the boat are ornate and considered. Only the initials "VR" on the bottom identify the maker — this is an unmarked piece with genuine mystery. The shape and craftsmanship place it in the 1930s to 1940s.
While the gravy boat is a more modern, utilitarian vessel built for the motion of pouring, the classical French saucière is an anchor of stationary elegance. It sits gracefully upon the table—a footed basin fused to its own protective tray—designed to be courted with a silver ladle. This lidded saucière is a rarer form — the lid keeps the sauce warm from kitchen to table, and the ladle makes serving effortless. A lovely jardinière for orchids or spring bulbs if you want another use for it entirely.
A beautiful and unusual find for a collector of American studio or mold-made ceramics, or anyone who wants a serving piece that invites conversation.
