The Wm. A. Rogers mark has a long history: used as early as 1897, it became part of the Oneida silver family around 1929 and continued in use as late as 1978 — which places this graceful little sauce bowl and its attached underplate somewhere in that mid-century window. The Maybrook pattern carries a pretty decorative rim on the underplate, and the shallow, wide bowl is one of the most versatile forms in the silverplate repertoire.

While the gravy boat is a more modern, utilitarian vessel built for the motion of pouring, the classical French saucière is an anchor of stationary elegance. It sits gracefully upon the table—a footed basin fused to its own protective tray—designed to be courted with a silver ladle.  The saucière form is one of the most practical serving vessels ever designed. Use it for sauces, dressings, olives, berries, or nuts — or add a small arrangement of flowers and use it as a low rose bowl on a side table. The attached underplate keeps it tidy and self-contained.

A lovely small gift for a hostess, a serveware collector, or anyone who appreciates a well-made American silver piece with real range.
