Tia Maria is a dark coffee liqueur made in Italy using 100% Arabica coffee beans, Bourbon vanilla and some Jamaican rum. There is a long running fable on how it was originally invented. Going back to the 17th century in Jamaica, a young Spanish girl forced to flee Jamaica invented it and gave credit to her aunt ("Tia" in Spanish), for saving her life. More believable is the story told by Morris Cargill, explaining he had the idea for developing a coffee liqueur similar to one his aunt used to make, however, he was unable to get her exact recipe. In 1946, he connected with Dr Ken Evans, who then developed the recipe. They partnered with others in Jamaica (Myers Rum, Desnoes & Geddes) to produce the first five thousand cases. Since Morris was trying to replicate his aunt's recipe, he called it Tia Maria. The brand has been owned by many including: Lascelles deMercado, Pernod, Hiram Walker, ILLVA Saronno, Illva Saronno's distillery in Saronno, Italy, (distributed by Bacardi). Tia Maria is still produced from the original Caribbean recipe by Illva Saronno, and distributed in over 60 countries, distribution is now managed by Kobrand.
