Libbey invented it. Declared their imitators endless. Starlyte was one of them — and according to the Museum of American Glass, they made a worthy version.
This is a set of five vintage cocktail glasses in Starlyte's Pattern 59-W — the Golden Foliage, with delicate 22K gold leaves set within a frosted band on a long, elegant thin stem. Blanks by Anchor Hocking, decorated by Starlyte Inc., New York. Circa 1970s. One set available.
The Golden Foliage story is worth knowing. Libbey introduced the pattern in 1956 and it became so iconic that their own 1968 catalog declared: "This is the genuine Golden Foliage line and its imitators are endless." Starlyte was among those imitators — but a serious one. Their version uses Anchor Hocking blanks and applies their own interpretation of the pattern in genuine 22K gold within a frosted band, with the long, thin stem that distinguishes Starlyte from Libbey's thicker bulb-stemmed originals. Starlyte Inc. was founded in New York on September 1, 1970 and closed December 23, 1992, leaving behind at least eight documented 22K gold patterns — identified only by letters and numbers, never by names. Pattern 59-W is among the most collected.
Suitable for cocktails, small wine pours, sorbets, or a fall bar cart display. The 1970s are having a serious revival right now and these are exactly the kind of piece that belongs on a well-styled bar.
Gold wear is present on some glasses — one showing more than the others — and one glass has a slight manufacturing smear on the gold rim. All photographed and priced accordingly.
A wonderful set for a Golden Foliage collector, a Starlyte enthusiast, a mid-century bar stylist, or anyone who wants five genuinely beautiful vintage stemware pieces with a story behind them.
