A horse-drawn sleigh glides down a snowy, wooded country road toward a church and cottages with smoke curling from their chimneys, on a classic antique Olive Can Co. cookie tin.

  • Maker: Olive Can Co.
  • Materials: Metal tin
  • Dimensions: 8.5" diameter x 2.25" tall
  • Origin: Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Era: Antique 1910s-1920s
  • Condition: Very good antique; surface scratches and a couple of small dents on the lower side. No rust inside or out, but it is stained with can corrosion (not the same as rust) and the lid has yellowed. Now empty. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.

The winter scene is on the lid and the rest of the tin is bright red. One side carries a label from Mrs. Voogt's Confections of Chicago. In our research that business sold to the Illinois Candy Company in 1924, which tells us this is a very old can. The bottom is embossed "Olive Can Chicago."

Perfect for a Christmas vignette or simple winter decor, and a treat for old tin collectors who love the look of antique tins with plenty of patina and pedigree.

Olive Can Company was founded in Chicago in 1912 by Michele Armato, an Italian immigrant who loved the craft of tin making and dreamed of starting a decorative tin factory. His sons Al and Philip helped run the company through the 1940s and 1950s, and by the 1970s Philip's son Keith Armato had deals with large companies such as Pillsbury, Carnation, Borden and Nestle for promotional food tins. After Philip passed away in 1975, Keith went on to other family-owned businesses and eventually opened his own, Union Street Packaging, now Union Street Tin Co. We have seen 1990s tins that still carry the Olive Can name.

Love the scene but want a tin in better condition? We have the same horse-drawn sleigh tin in a newer, cleaner version available now: Olive Can Co. Horse Drawn Sleigh Tin, Vintage 1940s. We also have other vintage Christmas tins available to round out your collection.
