Joan Walsh Anglund was born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1926. She was a much loved American poet and children's book author and illustrator. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art before working as an apprentice to a commercial artist. In 1946 she married Bob Anglund and they moved to New York City from the Midwest. In New York she was very lonely and would write her thoughts on paper and put them away, it was her husband who realized her tremendous talent, finding her writings and asking her to make illustrations to go with them. Her first book, “A Friend Is Someone Who Likes You” (1958), sold millions of copies and was on the New York Times' best sellers list. She also wrote several books of poetry for adults. Unfortunately then President Barack Obama, incorrectly attributed to Maya Angelou the quote: "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song". This quote is actually from Joan Walsh Anglund's memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". The U.S. Postal Service also incorrectly issued a stamp honoring Angelou in 2015, a year after her death with that quote. Joan Walsh Anglund went on to publish more than 120 books. Joan passed away on March 9th, 2021, of heart failure.
