Hakata dolls originate in Hakata, a historic district now part of Fukuoka on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. They became widely known in the West when American soldiers brought them home after World War II, and Japan began exporting them worldwide shortly after. The unglazed finish is traditional and preferred — glazing dulls the surface; the matte clay is what gives Hakata its particular warmth and depth. Today they remain one of Fukuoka's most iconic crafts.
