Top O' The Hill was designed by Leslie Harradine, one of Doulton's most celebrated figure sculptors, and based on an illustration by artist Molly Benatar; Doulton purchased the exclusive rights to reproduce the image in china from publisher Raphael Tuck. First introduced in 1937 and issued in this pink colorway as HN1849 from 1938 to 1975, she remains one of Doulton's most recognizable and enduring figures, having served as a demonstration piece at exhibitions for decades. This piece is stamped on the base with the Royal Doulton mark, "Made in England," registration number RdNo 822821, and the initials DW, identifying one of the specialized painters who worked in the Doulton studio.
