A baby with the characteristic sideways glance of the Kewpie tradition, blue wings, and a real satin ribbon in the hair — the eyes beautifully painted, the face sweet rather than mischievous, which suggests a later and gentler interpretation of the Kewpie form. Made from a hobbyist mold and painted by hand, this is the most detailed version of the style we've encountered. One of a kind in the way that all hobbyist pieces are.

Kewpie figures originated with illustrator Rose O'Neill, whose drawings debuted in Ladies' Home Journal in 1909 and became one of the most enduring characters in American commercial history. The bisque Kewpie figurine with its sideways glance was first produced in Germany around 1912. Later versions, including this one, were made from commercially available molds and painted by hobbyists — each piece uniquely its own within the tradition.

A lovely piece for a nursery, a baby shower gift, a Kewpie collector, or anyone drawn to the quiet appeal of a well-painted baby figurine.
